12 Regattas & Events to Decide ICRA's Boat of the Year 2022 Award

12 regattas and series will determine the Irish Cruiser Racer Association (ICRA) Boat of the Year award in 2022 including Kinsale Yacht Club's new south coast offshore race around the Blasket Islands.

Scoring in the Boat of the Year competition will be made up of a boat’s score for a given year and shall be the sum of the boat’s Event Scores from the events listed below.

Royal Cork's Nieulargo Leads in ICRA's Boat of the Year Award

Royal Cork's Grand Soleil 40 Nieulargo (Denis and Annamarie Murphy) has strengthened her position at the top of the Irish Cruiser Racing Association's Boat of the Year rankings thanks to a solid second place in the Coastal Division of Kinsale's Sovereigns Cup at the end of June.

George Sisk's WOW! Is Voted 'Boat of the Year' By ICRA

ICRA, the Irish cruiser–racer body has awarded its 'Boat of the Year' award to cruiser zero National Champion WOW, George Sisk's Farr 42 from the Royal Irish Yacht Club. The announcement was made today by outgoing ICRA Commodore Nobby Reilly after an ICRA executive meeting in Portlaoise, County Laois.

George Sisk's 2015 campaign took victory in Kinsale in June at the ICRA National Championships and Sisk also emerged tops on Dublin Bay at Volvo Dun Laoghaire Week.

WOW faced stiff competition from a selection of top cruiser racer campaigns for ICRA's top award. At today's meeting ICRA judges gave merit awards to the following boats: Checkmate, Encore, Equinox and Ruth. Shortlisted boats for the ICRA award are previewed here.

The meeting elected a new Commodore for a three year term. Simon McGibney from Kilrush in County Clare took over the top job from Reilly of Howth. More on details arising from the ICRA executive meeting on Afloat.ie next week.

'Raging Bull' Overtakes 'Errislannan' in 'Boat of the Year' Poll

Raging Bull overtook Errislannan in Afloat readers opinion poll at lunch time on who will win the Irish Cruiser Racing Association (ICRA) Boat of the Year Award, in just over a month's time. Over 350 voters have given their opinion so far on the ten boat shortlist produced by Afloat. Errislannan proved an early poll topper since voting began last Thursday but as late as lunchtime today votes for Raging Bull saw a dramatic lift, bringing the Irish Sea offshore champion ahead of the Top Cork week Sigma 38. At 2pm a third of the votes cast were for Raging Bull. Errislannan was on 31%. Tiger had 16% and was in third place ahead of Antix with 31 votes. About the TP52 Racing Yacht

The TP52 racing yacht is a remarkable example of cutting-edge technology in the world of competitive yachting. Measuring 52 feet (15.85 metres) in length, this vessel is constructed entirely from carbon fibre, making it an incredibly light and agile craft.

The TP52 features a 6.25-metre high rig, complete with a fractional asymmetrical spinnaker and a self-tacking jib. This design reduces the workload of the crew, allowing for more efficient manoeuvres and freeing up the crew to focus on the mainsheet upwind and on two-sail reaches.

The spinnaker rigging set-up, measuring 15.00 m2, presents a challenge to even the most experienced crews, requiring them to be fit and perfectly coordinated. Maneuvering the boat requires athleticism due to the vessel's lack of inherent stability and the high speed generated by the fully battened mainsail and jib.

The TP52's hull is constructed of fibreglass-reinforced polyester in a foam sandwich layout, resulting in a weight of just 74kg. The fully battened mainsail and jib are made from a transparent Mylar laminate with orange or red Dacron trimming, while the spinnaker is manufactured from ripstop Nylon.

The mast is made up of three parts, featuring an aluminium bottom and middle section, with a polyester-fibreglass composite tip to increase mast bend and decrease overall weight. The capsizing moment, which can be generated by a heavy mast tip, is also reduced through this design. The TP52's foils are constructed from either aluminium or fibreglass, depending on the specific requirements of the vessel.

Overall, the TP52 racing yacht is an exceptional example of the latest advancements in yacht design and technology. Its lightweight construction, advanced rigging, and high-speed capabilities make it a top contender in the world of competitive yachting, challenging even the most skilled and experienced crews.
