Ferry and air travel from the UK to Ireland will be banned for most people until the end of the year.

The Irish cabinet, reports NorthWalesLive, has agreed that the current travel restrictions between Ireland and Britain will remain in place until December 31.

The ban was initially introduced for a period of 48 hours after the emergence of a mutated variant of the coronavirus in Britain, which is believed to be more contagious.

The ban was due to expire at midnight on Tuesday, but has now been extended until New Year's Eve.

It means that only essential supply chain workers, freight drivers and Irish citizens returning to their permanent residence will be allowed to travel from Holyhead to Dublin this year.
