Afloat.ie regrets to announce the death of Peter Gray of Dun Laoghaire, one of the most talented and widely-experienced sailors of his long-lived and active generation. Initially a dinghy sailor across a wide range of classes, he represented Ireland in the 1960 Olympics racing a Flying Dutchman with Johnny Hooper, achieving the first win by any Irish crew in an Olympic race.
In sailing administration, he gave generously of his time for training, and served as President of the Irish Sailing Association in the 1980s. In retirement after a distinguished career in banking, he and his wife Susan made an extended round the world voyage in the Rival 41 Waxwing, for which they were awarded several trophies of the Irish Cruising Club.
We will publish a full appreciation of this exceptional sailor in due course, meanwhile, our heartfelt condolences are with his family and many friends.
