The Maritime Museum in Dun Laoghaire has appealed for volunteers to assist in the operation of the museum when it re-opens to the public in the New Year.

Over the last three years the museum has been closed for major restoration to the historic building which in fact is the greatest artefact on display. The museum is believed to contain the largest maritime collection of artefacts in Ireland.

The Maritime Institute of Ireland (MII) which has run the museum located in the Old Mariners Church in Dun Laoghaire's Moran Park since the 1970s.

About J Class Yachts

The J Class has its roots in the oldest sporting race in the world, The America’s Cup.

The founding of the J Class Association (JCA) in 2000 to protect the interests of the Class, present and future, accelerated a real revival.

Class Rules were established for the construction of replica rebuilds from original plans and several replicas and original designs were subsequently built.

The class, which today comprises nine boats, now has an annual calendar highlighted by the Caribbean and Mediterranean sailing seasons.
