Topping the Cape 31 class at Florida's 2023 Southernmost Regatta this week is Irish champion Antix, skippered by Anthony O'Leary.

After eight races sailed, the Royal Cork crew scored 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 2 - [5] - 3 - 5 to share the same 15 points as second-placed Extreme 2 skippered by Dan Cherish in the chartered Irish Cape, Adrenaline.

Cork Week 2022 Champions, Antix was one of the first teams to enter the new event in Key West that aims to rekindle interest in keelboat racing on Florida's blue waters.

Five Cape 31s are competing.

O'Leary and his team have, of course been racing in Key West for years and, according to social media, 'jumped at the chance to take their new toy over the pond for some winter sun'.

Onboard with O'Leary is Nick Butt, Cliodhna Connolly, Ben Field, sons Nicholas and Robert, Clive O Shea and Richie Watkin, whose role is described as 'Switch Flipper' for the week.

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
