Asgard II's Last Moments - Video

12th February 2009

Below the fold is footage of the last moments of Ireland's sail training vessel, the Asgard II, as she went down off the French coast on September 11, 2008. More than 950 people have now signed the petition to raise her from the sea bed.

The crew of the boat were at pains to praise the orderly fashion in which Asgard II was evacuated after it became clear she was taking on water rapidly. This is clearly visible in the video, with liferafts strung neatly together like Christmas lights in the dark, and two other vessels visible standing by.

Agitators are having their say on the Afloat forums, where a dedicated thread is discussing how best to raise awareness of the Asgard, and raise her completely from the French sea bed.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
