Welcoming the move, Minister Killeen stated, "Doolin Coast Guard has been doing wonderful work in entirely unsuitable conditions for the past numbers of years. The current site is restricted in terms of access and size. The new site is located close to the existing Headquarters and meets the requirements of the rescue service."
"I believe that the provision of new accommodation for the Coast Guard Services in Doolin continues to be a top priority for the Office of Public Works. The view of the OPW is that the location of the new Coastguard facilities ties in with Clare County Council's preferred option for the development of a new pier and ticket office in Doolin.
The Department of Transport, meanwhile, has also expressed its desire to see the project progressed," he added.
Commenting on the purchase of a new site, Minister Killeen said, "The purchase will be subject, inter alia, to planning permission and officials from the OPW are at present arranging to have the necessary surveys and technical assessments of the site carried out to enable the preparation of planning documentation. The OPW has repeatedly stressed that the construction process, including building design, planning permission application and tendering, will be proceeded with as quickly as possible."
