‘Devastation’ on Co Antrim River as More Than 1,000 Brown Trout Lost in Fish Kill

More than 1,000 brown trout have been lost in a major fish kill on a Co Antrim river, as BBC News reports.

On Friday (17 May), Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) confirmed the incident resulting from slurry pollution of the Four Mile Burn, a tributary of the Six Mile Water.

Local anglers believe the fish kill is agriculture-related, with Antrim and District Angling Association president John Mitchell adding: “It’s just devastation, the whole tributary is dead.”

That's what the Six Mike Water Trust's Michael Martin has alleged, as Farming Life reports, with claims that housing developments on the Kirbys’ Lane river walk are "destroying the river corridor" at the disabled angling stand.

What's more, a proposed development for 400 homes on the Six Mile Water's flood plain downstream in an area home to a variety of aquatic wildlife is "surely... a contravention to EEC Water Framework and Habitats Directives."

The Loughs Agency is a governmental body established under the 1998 Agreement between the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of Ireland.
