Greystones Dinghy Pair Win GP14 UK National Title With Race to Spare

7th August 2015

With their nearest rivals Flynn & Froggat out of the top four in Race 8, Greystones dinghy duo Shane McCarthy & Andy Thompson became GP14 UK Champions without having to sail the final race at Brixham this afternoon. Scroll down for results.

Today's final two races in the 44-boat fleet were delayed due to light wind. When eventually racing got underway Sutton Dinghy Club's Alan Blay & David Johnston took their 2nd race victory of the event in Race 8.

A 15th in Race 9 for Sutton pair was discarded leaving them in 6th overall in their first UK Nationals. It will be a great night in Brixham YC for the small Irish contingent with 5 race win trophies from the 9 and the not so small matter of a Championship trophy to collect between them.

Following a strong showing at the Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta last month, where with 35 boats the GP14 had largest class representation, these results show the Irish GP14 fleet to be ultra competitive also.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
