Rowing Twins Take Each Other On in Gannon Cup
Twin brothers Turlough and Patrick Hughes (20) will vie for dominance in the Gannon Cup, the annual colours race between Trinity and UCD, on the Liffey on Bank Holiday Monday. UCD, who will be seeking their fifth consecutive Gannon, will be stroked by Turlough Hughes, while Patrick will be in the five seat in the Trinity boat. UCD’s Dave Neale will be seeking his fifth Gannon Cup title.
Trinity’s women’s eight, winner of two of the last three Corcoran Cups, have experience in their crew for Monday. Sinead Rodger and Keira Buttanshaw compete in their second Corcoran Cup; Susannah Cass her third and Caitlin Condon, an American, her fourth. UCD Ladies Boat Club have yet to announce their crew.
Mark Pollock, the adventurer who competed in the Gannon in 1995, 1996 and 1997 – and won all three - will be the guest of honour at the event. Pollock has shown tremendous fortitude in taking on blindness and then, separately, paralysis sustained in a fall.

Irish Olympian O'Neill to Represent New Zealand in London
ROWING: Sean O’Neill from Co Limerick will represent New Zealand at the Olympic Games in London in the men’s four – the same boat class in which he rowed for Ireland in Beijing four years ago. O’Neill, who is now 31, moved to New Zealand in his teens, originally to play rugby, but he took up rowing there and won a number of national titles. He settled there and trialled for New Zealand in 2006, but then returned to Ireland and established himself in the national team. He was in the stroke seat of the Ireland (heavyweight) four which finished 10th in Beijing. He returned to New Zealand and has become a regular in the national team.

NUIG and Queen's Go Head to Head on the Erne
ROWING: Over 60 crews from all over Ireland will descend on Lough Erne tomorrow for the Erne Head of the River. This year competition looks set to be fierce. The biggest battle of the day should be between NUI Galway and Queen’s men’s senior eights. This will be the first time they have met this season, and both will be out to show their dominance.
From its humble beginnings in 1957, when just four crews took part, the Erne Head has gone from strength to strength, and the number of crews taking part has steadily increased. The organisers contend that at six kilometres tomorrow’s is the longest rowing event in Ireland, and the gruelling course provides athletes with the opportunity to test their both their fitness and their mental strength after winter training.
With a number of sharp bends to contend with, it is also the perfect stage for coxswains to show off their steering skills and their ability to get the best out of their crew when they start to tire. And of course, as crews battle to overtake each other, it provides plenty of excitement for those watching from the banks of the Erne.
The hosts of the event, Portora, will be approaching the event on the back of a double success at the Fermanagh Sports Awards where Derek Holland won Coach of the Year and the Boat Club at Portora Royal were joint winners of the Junior Team of the Year award.
Big Group Makes the Cut for National Rowing Trial
ROWING: Nineteen senior and under-23 athletes and a host of top juniors have been invited to the final National Assessment on April 6th to 9th. Arrangements will be made for those who have not completed the second ergometer test.

Queen's Crews Fastest at Lagan Head
ROWING: Queen’s University led the way at the Lagan Head of the River in Belfast. Their men’s senior double was the fastest crew in the first head, and their senior eight matched the feat in the second. There was a slight headwind, and conditions were excellent. The organisers left 30 to 40 second gaps between the crews to avoid congestion at Queen Elizabeth bridge, which is undergoing repair work.

Cork Head of the River Holds Pride of Place
ROWING: Cork Head of the River will go ahead tomorrow (Saturday) at the Marina with an entry of 330 crews. The event is a rolling head over 4,000 metres, with timing from 9.30 until 4.0. The head stands alone on the calendar this weekend after Carrick on Shannon cancelled their head of the river because of worries over the weather.
Head of the Shannon Cancelled
ROWING: The Head of the Shannon, scheduled for Saturday, February 18th, at Carrick on Shannon has been cancelled because of a forecast of high winds. The official forecast suggested that gusts could near 50 kilometres per hour on the day.
