MGM Boats sailing through tough times

31st July 2009

We're all aware that these can be tough times for the marine industry, but adaptability is imperative when looking into the future and vendors of luxury boats have had to look to other services to stay fiscally fit. In an interview in Business Plus magazine (July/August 2009) Martin Salmon of MGM Boats says: "Like most sectors, we have experienced a severe downturn over the past 18 months. But we're lucky to the extent that our marine leisure industry was never huge volume like the motor and property trade."

He continued: "We are still underserviced in terms of marina facilities around the coastline and this remains our biggest obstacle going forward."

Martin is quoted as saying that MGM started to feel the economic squeeze in June 2008. "We had three fantastic trading years between 2005 and 2008. We dlivered a large number of pre-ordered produciton boats in the spring of 2008 and then took immediate action and set about cutting our running costs. We cut our staff from 16 to nine in the space of six months. We operate a boatyard with crane and service facilities and this part of the business has seen us through the tough winter. Like everyone else, we have had to discount our prices," he said.

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.
