Kayaker Sets The Standard For The 'Shannon Sprint'

#Kayaking - Kayak instructor David Horkan writes on his blog about setting the benchmark for the 'Shannon Sprint' -- paddling as fast as possible from start to finish on Ireland's longest river.

With no precedent for any such speed-run along the length of the River Shannon, Horkan's research turned up a Naval Service boating challenge for new recruits racing from Battlebridge in Co Leitrim to Sarsfields Bridge in Limerick city.

However, while that 'sprint' is done by powerboat in a matter of hours, Horkan's twist on the route was to complete it solo by touring kayak, with his sister Mary as support crew.

And complete it he did, in less than three days - fighting along the way the various challenges of exhaustion, windy lough crossings, mental fatigue and even a car door on his finger!

Horkan's blog has much more on the story HERE.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
