'Nothing Is Going To Happen To Me' Among Excuses From Boaters Skipping Lifejackets

15th August 2015

#WaterSafety - There's never a good reason to go out on the water without a lifejacket. But as TheJournal.ie reports, the Irish Coast Guard still hears plenty of excuses.

Chief among them is the old chestnut, "I have lifejackets on board" – though naturally they offer no protection unless they're being worn correctly.

"I'm a strong swimmer" is the second most heard excuse for skipping a personal flotation device which, as the coastguard reminds, shows ignorance of the cold temperature of Irish waters even on hot summer days.

And with other popular excuses including "it gets in the way", "it doesn't look cool" and "nothing is going to happen to me", water safety chiefs might have their work cut out for them.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
