Dear Minister O'Dea, "Over 10,000 have learned the ropes on her deck, many of them from across the religious divide on our island. She flew the tricolour in hundreds of ports around the world, providing positive and cost effective international exposure for this nation. And she served as a tangible link to our recent and turbulent past. On an island nation that so often turns its back on the sea, Asgard II – built by Irish hands, inspired by Irish history, recognised around the globe – came to symbolise all that was possible for our maritime industry. Recognising the unique role played by this brigantine, we, the undersigned, call on the Irish government to move immediately to salvage her and begin work on her restoration. We also call on the Irish government to commit to the future of the sail training programme, in the event that Asgard II cannot now be salvaged, by setting out a timetable for the commissioning of a replacement vessel". If you agree we need your name for the petition. Click here then type your name, email address and feel free to comment. It would also be a great help if you forwaded the link to this page to other Asgard supporters. Thanks for your support. Raise the Asgard Asgard 2 is a unique Vessel, not just a museum piece but a working vibrant ship. As an ambassador for Ireland she had no equal, a sail training ship giving young and not so young a taste of maritime history. She is lying upright, Rigging still intact, she is insured which will cover the cost of salvage and refurb. Why wait until she can be destroyed by fishing nets and Biscay storms??? Act now ! Please! Raise the ASGARD 2 This wee Brigantine has flown our flag with pride everywhere she went Australia, America and all over Europe. We had the biggest ensign (tricolour) in the fleet on the 26th January 1988 on Australia's 200th Birthday and Lady Diana even wore a matching green dress that day as we sailed past her. This is no ordinary ship. She has forged countless life-long friendships across the world an gave the first taste of salt to many of our Merchant Navy, Military Navy and international sailors. She draws a crowd and a heart-warming smile wherever she goes. Willie, lift her up where she belongs and show the people of Ireland that love means more than money. Gerry Burns |

... Mr O'Dea like everything in Ireland at present you have missed the boat. The very violent storm that passed through Biscay last weekend has probably damaged Asgard beyond repair. If this is the case do not leave sail training die in Ireland. As a temporary measure use the insurance money to purchase and refit this vessel "Lady Ellen" topsail schooner 146' €2.9 million asking price, Sweden, steel hull built 1982. see yachtworld.com. This vessel could be on duty for May 2009 if you have the commitment and will to do so and a further bonus no extra cost to the taxpayer. Go Willie Go. It gives the country time to design and build a proper replacement for Asgard II. |

... This one's from Nova Scotia, Canada. After witnessing time and again the incredible transformation of youth that took place on a daily basis aboard that fine vessel; after working for 4 summers in the Irish Sail Training community; and after making life-long friendships with the professional and talented leaders and participants in that community - I am saddened beyond words that the vessel should have been left for so long in such a harsh area. There are many larger countries with deeper pockets that have taken notice of - and yearned for - the Asgard program and the vessel itself. It was truly a jewel in Irelands Crown. As many folks have noted, the time to act was months ago. The neglect shown by the decision makers involved does an ugly disservice to the tens of thousands of people - Irish and otherwise - who have been captured by the spirit and intent of the Asgard operation. However - until there is evidence that damage beyond repair has in fact been done to the hull - you MUST proceed immediately with plans to raise the vessel. Mr O'Dea, there is still a chance to bring hope back here, to recover and rekindle what has been lost. Get it done, sir. |

Salvage Asgard It is deeply ironic that shortly after we published the first international study of sail training, and showed the unequivocal benefits of such work, that Asgard was lost. As a national sail training vessel she is important not just in Ireland but in the international; sail training community. She should be raised and restored. Asguard II One cannot underestimate the benefit of going to sea as the crew of a ship. It may be a cliche, but take a boy to sea and retun a man. One only has to look at the postings on You Tube from her crew to see the impact she has made on them. At 30 odd years old she is not even half way through her life. My passion for the development and promotion of ISA Training Schemes ensures that many of today’s hot shots first put their foot in the water via programmes I helped to pioneer. In 2007 my commitment to training of the young was recoginised by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, as I was one of eight who received National Awards for our commitments to our sports. Sailor and lover of the sea Dear Minister, To view the Asgard under full sail, with the banner sized Tri-colour proudly flying above the stern, powering down the River Lee, past Passage West, Gelnbrook, Monkstown, Cobh and Haulboline,is a sight to behold and not to be forgotten. This is also true of other ports and harbours around the world. In these times of global downturn, you should get a better price from the salvage companies for raising the Ship. The country needs an uplift, and what better symbol than to uplift the Asgard. Yours pleadingly Ian. |

... To leave the Asgard on the bottom of the ocean would be a great shame not only for Irish sailing but for Ireland as a whole. The French are watching us from the side lines scratching there heads wondering why no effort has been made by the Irish to save there Natioal sail training Asgard. The Asgard is sitting on the ocean floor perfectly up right with no extra damage done to the hull from the sinking. This in its self is amazing and the longer it is left on the bottom the more of a chance of damage, If the Ascard can be saved then it should be for the people of Ireland. Also the Captain of the Asgard should be given a reward for his seamanship. |

Thoughts on Asgard II; A National Treasure at the bottom of the ocean. Like a large number of people I know who sailed on Asgard II, I was very upset at her loss. It is a credit to all aboard her that noone was hurt. Our thanks must be to the French, for their very speedy reaction to attend the situation. Personally, I sailed with Asgard twice. She was a beautiful lady of the seas - everyone felt safe on her; one knew that she'd take care of you, whatever the sea conditions. Like any girl she wasn’t to be messed with – but she did look after you. She was a terrific emblem for Ireland. Britain may have had the Royal Yacht, the Americans their aircraft carriers, but Asgard was the perfect platform for flying the tricolour abroad for Ireland – she, and especially because of the kids that learned to sail her, was a modest colourful and welcoming ambassador for Ireland. She gave so many kids and those young at heart the experience of a lifetime – teaching them teamwork and courage at sea, all within a short week of being onboard. I will never forget the first time I climbed the mast – so terrifying I had to put my hand on my knee to stop it shaking - but by the end of the trip we were all scurrying up the mast like maritime gibbons. Please bring her back, or rebuild her. It’s got nothing to do with sentimentality. She's priceless to the country – as both an ambassador and for the character-development of our kids. Those kids will have gone onto other activities encouraging more young people to take part in outdoor pursuits etc. You were concerned about the cost about replacing her. Well Asgard was built in the early ‘80s when we had hard economic times too. Replacing her would be a terrific chance to uplift the country – something visible, tangible and off the People. Most of the people who sailed her over the last 25-30 years will support any fund for a new Asgard – no longer school and college kids but working in business etc. She and her replacement is fundamental to this little island and its maritime traditions. Is Mise, Michael O'Donnell |

... As usual, the irish government is failing to take action on something of importance to irish people. The Asgard II is sitting idle, and will no doubt break down and decay if she is left too long. Meaning that the longer she is left the less likely she'll be salvaged. traditional tall ships are so rare in this country that the idea of allowing one to go to waste, to just dissolve into some shipwreck that will be of no interest to anyone in the future is criminal. TO allow a piece of our heritage to be left behind is more proof (as if we needed it) that our government has not got the ability to deal with issues that are important to this country. Instead they are happy to leave young Irish people without the incredible opportunity that the Asgard provides. The money is there, the desire clearly isn't and the longer we wait the harder it will become and the worse she'll be. Do we really want her to end up with the Asgard I, famously owned by Erskine Childers, ignored and undervalued in some shed in Collins Barracks because no one cares? Shame on Minister O'Dea, and shame on his department. The department of the Taoiseach stated that the burial of the Asgard I at sea, as suggested by our minister for defense, Bobby Molloy, "would be widely regarded as an act of destruction"*. Why is the same fate for the Asgard II not being considered in the same way? *Irish Times website , Tuesday December 30th 2008. |

I was fortunat enough to be one of the 10,000 lucky few to have mentioned above to have the honour of sailing on her not once but twice. out of all my extensive sailing experances (Ireland, france, scotland, norway, denmark, The norht of ireland, the east and south coast of the ROI) my time on the asgard is by far the most memerable. The thought of the Asgard 2 being left to rot on the sea bed seriously saddens and even depresses me. she was and still is one of a kind which cannot be let go, as pointed out above if she has infact deteriorated beyond salvage, she most sertainly should be repalced ! along side the Jean Johnston and the Newly constructed viking long Boat the Asgard stands for our rich history, our heratage and our culture built around the sea form the Vickings to present day. this is a culture, heratage, and history that we should be and are very proud of, and should not be let slip into the world of fantasy, myth and memory. |

What other choice do you have? ... Dear Minister, given that the vessel was insured and is in good condition, an attempt should be made to raise her as soon as possible, with no further delays or filibustering excuses from officials in your department. Politically astute yet mischievous commentators might get the feeling that this foot dragging is in the hope that Asgard II deteriorates to an extent where salvage is not an economic proposition. Please make a decision one way or another to either raise her or replace her. The Asgard's contribution to the thousands of young Irish men and women who have trained on her over the years is immeasurable. Given the recent report of her current good condition, time is of the essence and a salvage attempt should be made as soon as possible (ie first break in the current weather). With respect no one will blame you or your department for trying, but the political cost of doing nothing in this island nation with a proud maritime history could be high. This saga is gathering media interest, the vessel is insured, it is time to act, the Irish nation could be forgiven for thinking this paralysis of decision making permeates the entire administration which is worrying in the current economic climate. |

I agree that sail training must continue to move forward and I fully appreciate the volunteers efforts to maintain the Asgard but maybe it is time to move on and create another fine training vessel. We have the Jeanie Johnston as a sail training vessel at the moment and it cost a lot to put in place. Does any one honestly know just how much it will cost to raise and repair, how it will be funded, and where the work can be done? It will end up going out to tender and could possible end up in a French or English shipyard as they will undercut the Irish yards. She was a beautiful ship but nostalgia has it place. Humanity with all its fears, With all the hopes of future years, Is hanging breathless on thy fate! We know what Master laid thy keel, What Workmen wrought thy ribs of steel, Who made each mast, and sail, and rope, What anvils rang, what hammers beat, In what a forge and what a heat Were shaped the anchors of thy hope! Fear not each sudden sound and shock, 'Tis of the wave and not the rock; 'Tis but the flapping of the sail, And not a rent made by the gale! In spite of rock and tempest's roar, In spite of false lights on the shore, Sail on, nor fear to breast the sea! Our hearts, our hopes, are all with thee. Our hearts, our hopes, our prayers, our tears, Our faith triumphant o'er our fears, Are all with thee, -are all with thee! Longfellow |

... Minister, Ireland needs Asgard back more than ever, with the state of the countires ecomomy Irelands young people need something positive. I have sailed on Asgard many times and have witnessed the remarkable effect this beautiful ship and her crew have had on those young people that most of society would rather turn their back on or lock up. It has changed their lives for the best. This has been proven time and time again. Many young people are now sailing the high seas as a career after finding a love of the sea on Asgard, these kids were destined for a life less fortunate, but meeting other young people from other parts of society has changed their outlook. Where else would you find a doctor, a teacher, an army cadet and a young person who was on their last chance with the law for stealing cars, sharing a love of the sea and drinking tea at 3am whilst crewing our beautiful ship as slips past the sleeping irish coastline. These are the magic life changing moments that Asgard has offered thosands of Irelands young people. It brings people together, unites them, and teaches them that teamwork is the only way to get things done and the each individual person has an important role. Imagine being 16 years of age and you have the wheel of a ship, the pride and self confidence that it gives to that person is immeasurable, I know because that is what sailing on Asgard gave to me, a confidence and understanding that I could do anything if I put my mind to it. Money cannot buy that, only experience can. So Minister it is time act, the young (and the not so young) people need their ship back, and I fail to see a reason why this cannot be done, the rebuilding will bring jobs back to a country that needs it, the re-launching will bring hope and excitement back to a country that is tired of bad news and you could be the one to do it!!Please do not hide behind the excuses of economic hardship etc etc, I am sure if you used the insurance money to raise her, there are several people who would be only too willing to help out to get her back to her former glory...you have no end of volunteers who want to help. It starts with you, do the right thing by the young people!!Bring her back home |

The failure of Dept. of Defence to commission a salvage operation to raise our national sail training vessel in a swift decisive manner is being viewed with disdain and disbelief by the French and other European maritime neighbours, as well as many Irish people for whom Asgard was an Icon. End the shameful waiting and indecision, utilise the vessel's insurance for its rightful purpose, and make haste all hands to assist a vessel in trouble. |

Sir, You have the money. Sir, four barracks closed, Chad costing est4 million per tour of duty 1. There has to be savings if the barracks/posts are closed.. ie ESB, Fuel, selling of the land etc. 2. tChad is due to be taken over by a UN mandate in March/April so it will no longer be a EUFOR mission which means that you won't have the full expense of mission.. 3. There was a fund set up to refloat Asgard (Asgard 1 Erskine Childers boat) she still isn't in the water so those funds are in a bank account somewhere. The ship herself is in Collins Barracks Dublin and that restoration can be put on hold. 4. Wasted peace across the border money on the Donbrody* if she doesn't leave the quays in Dublin. Spend the money on what we the people want. 5. How many disadvantage teens from your voting constitute were given the chance to sail on her and as a result have made positive changes to their life. 6. President of the Irish Institute of Master Mariners. Commercial Manager Port of Cork The Asgard 11 has played a very important role in providing young Irish people with an opportunity of experiencing time at sea. This has opened their eyes to the importance of the sea to an island nation. Many have gone on to a career at sea and many of the Harbour Masters and Pilots in our ports and Officers serving in the Merchant Navy and Naval Service had their first seagoing experience on Asgard 11. The delay in raising the vessel has undoubtly resulted in additional damage, nevertheless ,she should be immediately surveyed and raised if feasable depending on the quantum of damage and recovery costs. |

Let the Asgard raise her sails once more - raise her while we can No more time should be delayed. I want so much to see her -the Asgard- again, to walk on the deck, climb up the rigging and listen once more to Kev's -the cook- incredible stories about his life on the seas. I was only with her for 8 days but she has had such an impact on my life. I wont forget the first time standing on the yard-arms when she was away from the docks. The wind and sun were out in force and I can remember just trying to untie the sails in time with the rocking of the ship as she drove through the water. I hope also not just for our sake that she is raised but for future generations and of course, most importantly, for the permanent crew members both present and past to whom the Asgard was a huge part of their lives. During the brief and memorable time I sailed with her, the Asgard was my home, the crew my family and my fellow trainees my friends. I hope she joins us soon to lift her sails once more. |

The last cruise was the Tall Ships Race of this summer, from Maloy to Den Helder. As a consequence, learning the very sad news just 3 weeks after disembarking has been a real shock. Board of DIrectors I read with irony that the Minister says he will make his decision in consulation with the Board of Coiste an Asgard. Traditionally, members of this board were involved with the sea and had an interest in the sea and sail training. However, look at the present board members now(Asgard website). Most of them are from Limerick(suprised?). We need to know the degree of their competence and knowledge of maritime matters. Why have they not done or said anything before now? The ship should have been lifted after the last survey in September. Given they are appointed by the government, I would suggest they are the voices of Minister O Dea and have no such intention. I hope I am proved wrong. Questions need to be asked. |

It was the experience and professionalism of her Captain and crew which ensured this tragedy was not far greter. I cannot put a value on the memories, friendships and skills that I obtained aboard Asgard2 which will stay with me for life. If Willie O'Dea and his government do not salvage the Asgard they are denying the young people of Ireland an oppurtunity to sail aboard one of the most beautiful tall ships in the world and learn the skills which will help them develop into valuable members of Irish society. I hope the right decision will be made, so that Coiste an Asgard can continue their invaluable work which is beneficial not only to the young people who sail aboard Asgard 2 but also Irish Society as a whole. |

I don't know every name name here but I do recognise names from sailing clubs, Officers of the the Irish Merchant Navy, Irish Naval Service personal, RNLI, Asgard Support Group, full time Asgard crew and fishermen, these are the people who hold sailing close to their hearts every day.. these are the people who get a lump in their throats when they hear about bad weather at sea, or a craft in diffuiclty we are a close knit group where social background is not taken in to account. Minister as an other signee pointed out the Jeanie Johnston can be used as a short term measure. We are an Island nation with the oldest sailing club in the world and we the people are begging our government to reinstate a sail training program.. please listen to us.. read the names and put faces to them.. You will be surprised to know that we come from all backgrounds and are spread out thought the world we are the ambassadors of Ireland, tour guides, in each and every way to this Island Nation... Poet, writer One year after the Civil War ended, Conor O'Brien carried the tricolour of the new state around the world on his 2-year circumnavigation. Our tricolour flew on the first yacht to round Cape Horn, and since then it has flown on the seven seas, speaking of us as an island people, a people of the sea. It is no accident that as our economy founders on the rocks of greed and mismanagement, the sea has taken Asgard — a sign, if we know how to read it, that we have been following a delusional course. If we need a metaphor for what we need now as a people, then let the salvage of Asgard be that metaphor; let us restore her to her glory, and let her carry the flag once more to the four corners of the world. |

The Asgard is one of those very symbols and it is known worldwide. Sitting on the bottom of the sea is no place for such a ship steeped in history and despite any economic difficulties that the country and the world may be experiencing, both time and money should be afforded to maintaining our history and raising this tall ship that has given so much to the world of sailing. |

We are a small nation that has sent our people all over the world for hundreds of years. Most of them left in small ships. A lot of them worked on small ships. I know times are tough but that is when we find out what is important. " Like the Mary Ellen Carter, let her rise again" We need inspiration in these times, don't become like the bean counters of the world. Mr Minister, it is sometimes difficult to take the long view of events especially in times of national crisis. And it can be especially difficult to see the significance of an icon such as the Asgard II and what it will mean for generations of Irish people to come. In Denmark and Sweden they look after their maritime history with great pride and at great expense. This is not surprising - these ships are part of a people's history and their culture , they define us in some way. You have to imagine someone in 100 or 200 years time looking at the Asgards I and II sitting proudly in a gleaming new museum in the heart of Dublin city and understanding how these ships are a narrative of the birth and development of our nation. Unless you believe history is over of course and not your responisbility. Have we as a nation evolved in 90 years to adulthood or do we continue to behave with the short sightedness of teenagers? Remember Todd Andrews is still thought of as short sighted - not because he closed the Harcourt Street line (that was the zietgeist of the 50s and 60s in Britain and Ireland) - rather he failed to have the vision to imagine a day when they could re open the line and never took steps to keep the integrity of the permanent way. Raise the Asgard II now, stop the clock and we can restore her at leisure. |

... Even if she's being ripped up at the bottom of the sea, she's depreciating less than a lot of other shares in this country. Find out if it's genuinely possible (without wasting a lot of money) to raise Asgard, then do it. It would be refreshing for a quick decision to be made by this government, that was quickly implemented, for the good of all the young people on this island. Consider it an investment. |

... If the Asgard is not raised now, in about 20 years the government of the time will think that it is a good idea to raise it up for the sake of Irish history, and because once upon a time we were an island nation with a national sail training vessel, and we cared about our children and our nation. when it is raised it will be beyond repair and then they will build a new Asgard. Why not be brave now Mr. O'Dea show us what you are made of, make the island nation proud and raise the Asgard, we should not be the only country without a sail training vessel. Grasp this opportunity make the hard decision, it will be worth it, think of the glory when it is restored to its former glory and you can launch it again - just do it. For the sake of the Asgard loving Irish doit, doit, doit, doit, doit, doit, doit. We need the Asgard................. |

... The experience of sailing and living on such a wonderful ship should be available to all in this country. From 1988 untill 1997 I did over ten voyages on board that beautiful vessel and it has shaped the person I am. I cannot believe that we can allow her to be left at the bottom of the ocean. Infact, I still can't believe that she sank. I still expect to see her gliding silently into Baltimore or Dublin Bay. Bring her home! |

It is now almost 6 months since she sank. Does Willie O'Dea want his name to be remembered for saving Asgard II or for abandoning her? |

what are you waiting for? The survey last week has shown her to be in the same location and with her rig largely intact. We have been told that there will be £3.8 million insurance money and that the salvage operation will cost approx half of it which leaves half of it for restoration....it makes sense!! We have seen how much the building of new tallships have cost in the past with the Jeanie and the Dunbrody. Both magnificent vessels but neither suitable for sail training. We have a unique, purpose built vessel sitting on the sea floor just waiting to be rescued. Having sailed on board on numerous occasions including the opening of the Newry canal and Tallships 2000 in New York and Boston I have seen how Asgard is an ambassador for our country, small and green but full of highs spirits and positivity. Let’s see some of this positivity and raise the spirits of the Irish people...both those of us who have been privileged to have sailed on board and those who haven't. Asgard has been a major part of my and I hope she continues to be. Waiting for the right decision to made..you know what it is, Gemma PS Minister, I recommend that once you raise her Minister and she is back on the high seas that you book yourself on board and see what everyone has been talking about it...you certainly won't regret! |

Do the right thing! Yet another example of the inability of this government to actually make a decision or do the right thing. Shame on the government and shame on you Minister O'Dea! As an island nation steeped in a rich maritime history, the neglect of all things maritime, by officialdom in this country, over the years has been both astonishing and shameful. Will anyone forget the immense pride felt by all Irish people in July 2005 when hundreds of thousands of people from Ireland and indeed all over the world visited Waterford to attend the prestigeous International Tall Ships event. The organisers in Waterford did Ireland proud and immense pride was the overiding feeling that weekend as the 3 fabulous Irish Tall Ships (Asgard II, Jeanie Johnston & Dunbrody) sailed together out of Waterford. The benefits and rewards of sail training extend far beyond the actual voyage itself. This country needs to continue with the sail training programme. Quit the dithering and give the go-ahead to raise this fine ship without further delay, while there is still something left to salvage and get her back into commission as soon as possible. In the meantime, the Jeanie Johnston is an obvious temporary replacement as the national sail trainig vessel. |

Master of the 110ft Brigantine ZEBU, out of Liverpool ASGARD must be raised. Awaiting better weather is necessary as it will not be an easy salvage, but the Insurers are "on board". If Willie O'Dea hesitates about the end cost - just go for it, Minister -take the first neccessary step. Merseyside volunteers were the key to ZEBUs resurrection; Irish people will be there for ASGARD. Contact us -we have travelled this road and how we did it will be helpful. Hopefully, the Irish Sea's Brigantines will one day Race together. |

I was lucky enough to have competed 3 adventures on this wonderful vessel and after that i was bitten by the bug. SInce then i have spent most of my adult years on the bridges of various merchant vessels and when i think of the Asgard 2, i have nothing but fond memories! This vessel is a part of irelands soul like the cliffs of moher or the GPO........She must be raised and repaired. Do the right thing! Bring her home to Ireland! |

What are you waiting for - 145 days now since Asgard II went down The finance (insurance)is there to lift the ship. I do not think there is one person in the whole country who would not agree that this is the right and only choice to be made. After all who amongst us has not either sailed on her, some many times, or has a relation or friend who has. So Minister O'Dea, please sign those papers now...restore Asgard II to Ireland, before it is too late...give us something positive to think about our current government...and give the future young people of the country the chance to sail on her... |

... This is the ideal opportunity to bring some much needed cheer and something positive to the people of Ireland. Is this going to be another example of the misappropriation of Irish money, why bother paying insurance if you then decide to leave her sitting at the bottom of the sea!?! Are we seeing yet more short sightedness by the government? What is wrong with our elected representatives that they can't see the wonderful opportunity that they are going to leave to rot. Not only is she a fantastic boat but her restoration and subsequent return to service will provide much needed employment. The Tall Ships Race in 2011 is due to start in Waterford and then continue around the south, west and north coasts of Ireland. Are we to welcome tall ships from around the world and enjoy the revenue generated from this event knowing that we left our beloved entry to this race 80m below water in the Bay of Biscay. Minister, do the right thing for all concerned, yourself included, and raise the Asgard II. |

... Over the years Asgard turning many a troubled youth into a stable member of society. Economically her running costs are surely justified by the associated reduction in crime, drug use and broken families. The cost of salvage & refitting seems to be covered by insurance. The refitting work will create jobs. I really don't see a down side to raising such a magnificent symbol of national pride. Peter |

... In a time when economic sense has to enter any government decision, raising Asgard makes sense. The insurance money will pay for the lift and refitting and in a time when our youth face a very uncertain future the confidence and competance that an experiance on Asgard brings is surely a priceless comodity in the near future. The ship has to be raised, the expense to the state will be too great otherwise and the thought of no sail training vessel is an utterly unthinkable outcome. |

Asgard II Please please consider raising Asgard and not trying to build another. She was so amazingly loved by everyone in sail training and the sailing world and could never be replaced. It must be cheaper in the long run to raise her than re-build her and the publicity you will get from raising her and getting her back on the water would be massive! |

... I did a delivery trip from Melbourne to Sydney in 1988 as a member of the "wrinkly" crew and made life long friends during her time in Sydney. When one British tabloid reported the Australian Bicentenial Parade of sail in 1988, it was stated that even if the Irish Sail Training Vessel was one of the smallest ships in the fleet she had the biggest heart. For once they got it right! Surely it would be cheaper to raise her than build another. She is loved not only in Ireland but around the world. |

Please raise Asgard II Dear Sir or Madam, As a volunteer on various Tall Ships over the past 8 years - I have seen first hand the change one trip can make. I only had the fortune to sail on Asgard II once, but the ship and her crew left a massive impression on me - such comeradery, the right balance between learning and having fun - there is no way that you can replace that. I was shocked and dumbfounded when I found out what had happened to her, and I can only hope that you do everything possible to raise her from the sea bed and restore her to her former glory. Yours sincerely, Joyce van den Hoven |
