No Ministerial decision before next month on Asgard II, PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 24 January 2009

Lorna Siggins, Marine Correspondent of the Irish Times reports this morning that there will be no Ministerial decision before next month on the future of the sunken sail training ship, Asgard II, according to the Department of Defence. A second subsea survey of the vessel, lying in 83m of water off the northwest French coast, was postponed this week due to bad weather. Afloat.ie readers have campaigned for the boat to be lifted from the seabed since in sank three months ago.

The latest in the excellent Irish Times coverage of the saga is here

We've simply got to raise the charming and understated Ashard II. It's the pride of the nation.
My very first memory of the Asgard II was that I was on the iconic boat in Australia at the Tall Ships Race in the early nineties. My father was the Fist Officer onboard the Asgard which sailed from Ireland to participate at the races.

The reasons for raising (and restoring) the Asgard II are compelling. It is an understated and a charming boat - it PROUDLY flies the flag for Ireland with its beautiful green colour and not to mention the lady (what's she called? The Asgard II mermaid?) at the front of the boat. The ship has so much heritage - we can't afford to put this under the carpet. We've got to see it back happily afloat, docking at the ports of Ireland and sailing, teaching people how to sail the wonderful boat.
