Foynes YC win ISA Yachtsman Euromarine RIB Challenge PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 10 November 2009

Congratulations to Foynes Yacht Club, winner of the ISA Yachtsman Euromarine National Rib Challenge trophy for 2009, holding off nine other teams for the prize. This is a good result for a club which decided recently to invest their time and resources in powerboat training.

Ten teams from around the country qualified for the final which was held in Wexford Boat & Sailing Club on Saturday last in some rather windy and wet conditions.  The competition, organized by the Irish Sailing Association, is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of powerboat crews whilst providing a chance to represent their club or training centre in a competitive environment. Foynes are delighted to come out winners of this prestigious and All Ireland competition, and say all sailing clubs need to draw on qualified, competent and committed powerboat crews who remain a key function in managing the safety and efficiency of sailing events. Their success may encourage others to become qualified and involved in powerboat activities in the club.

"It is surely a great source of pride for the Club senior training instructor, Peadar McGrath and his hard working training and development team that, in the same year that ISA Training Centre accreditation was obtained, the club could send a team to a national competition and come away with the prize" said Commodore Tom Murray. "The magnificent prize of a brand new rib could not have come at a better time as the club prepares to host the 2010 National Mermaid Championships"

The team panel that took the laurels for Foynes were former Commodore Pat Finucane (Captain), Louis Clifford, John-Paul Buckley and Padraic Kelly and John-Joe Buckley. The rib was sponsored by Euromarine – it is 5 metres in length complete with a 40hp engine and trailer. All the members of the club will get an opportunity to congratulate the team and admire the new rib at the laying-up supper on Saturday, November 21st at the Clubhouse.
