An Irish regatta for a whole lot less? PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 09 March 2009

In a targeted move on UK fleets Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta 2009 organisers are focusing on the value for  money aspect of its four day regatta this July (9th –12th). The organiser, who expect an entry of 500 boats, are catering for IRC Cruisers, White Sails, One Design and Dinghies and making a big deal about the compact site of the East coast town that offers racing ten minutes from the marina berth.

Only eight weeks remain to to avail of the event's early entry discount. The four waterfront yacht clubs are to welcome the armada of more than 500 boats from Ireland, France, Spain, Scotland, Wales, The Isle of Man and England this July to Dublin Bay where over 250 races will be run for the 25 classes and over 3,500 sailors participating.

The biennial regatta was launched by Mary Hanafin TD at the Allianz Dublin Boat Show and is welcoming sailors to enter its third regatta.

Key changes in Race Format for the 2009 Event:

≈   Introduction of a Sutton/Howth day for larger keelboats

≈   Flexibility for Race Officers to set fixed mark courses

≈   Introduction of a Feature Race on the Sunday morning

≈   Each day classes will experience different race areas, courses variations and different Race Officers all of whom are either International or National qualified officials

For those traveling with you preferring to keep their feet dry, there will be a number of waterfront activities scheduled, including an appearance by The Jeanie Johnston, the replica 19th century vessel and famine history museum. Other activities street entertainment including a carnival with face painters and balloon men, numerous ladies fashion events, a vintage car rally, live music from jazz to traditional Irish to marching bands, local area restaurant and pub events, an evening of Irish culture, music, food and dancing and a scheduled RNLI Air Sea Rescue demonstration.
