Electics rewiring 4 Months ago
Hi all, I am new to sailing and have just bought an 8m sailing cruiser. While everything works fine, there are small jobs that need doing, one of which is revamping the wiring.
Has anyone please got a recommendation for a marine electrician in the waterford city area, or surrounds. No big jobs but I don't want to touch it myself at this early stage of sailing.
Thanks and regards
Paul

Thanks for the response Pii - Basically I think I fully need to rewire the yacht and bring it up to date. What is there is a mess and unorganised. I forgot to mention that the yacht is in Waterford Ireland and I see you are based State-side. I have started to re-wire it myself as a stop-gap but eventualy would prefer someone qualified to look it over and either approve it or redo the work.
Thanks a illion.

I am based in Dublin. If everything works I would suggest that if you are not sure about what you are doing that you stop as it will cost you more in the long run. Before it was purchased was it surveyed and what did they say about the wiring.
What type of boat is it and how old and if you wish you can post contact detail and I will contact you to discuss further.

Hello again Pii - sorry for the delay but was off sailing to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for my Day Skipper and then put my new skills to the test
Thank you again for your replies and to answer - yes the boat was surveyed prior to buying and all works ok. However I purchased a chartplotter which is only temporarily wired and discovered that whenever the engine is turned on it creates a surge of power which turns off the log/depth and chart plotter. I also have issues with the VHF arial and when I looked at how it has been done it is just a mess of wires, too short in some cases and not very maintainable. The boat is an 8M Offshore Van de Stadt 1972 and is a wonderful boat. It could very much do with the electrics overhaul - plus at some stage I will want to put in a battery charger for when shorebased and also either a wind gennie or solar panels. For all that, the consol needs extra switches and space etc....
